Scalp Micropigmentation For

Men & Women

Typical SMP For Men

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) for men involves depositing pigment into the upper layers of the scalp to mimic the appearance of shaven hair follicles. Blending with existing hair creates the illusion of a full head of hair. The process results in a natural-looking, closely shaven hairstyle, enhancing the overall appearance of hair density.

Typical SMP For Women

For women, Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) uses the same technique of depositing pigment into the scalp. However, the focus is on creating the illusion of increased hair density and fullness beneath longer hair. This helps to give the appearance of a fuller head of hair, boosting confidence and enhancing the look of natural hair.
Starting at $800 – $4000 (depending on baldness) | Usually take 2- 3 session

Understanding

SMP & Skin Anatomy

As an SMP artist and body art practitioner, it is crucial to understand the skin’s anatomy, how it reacts to treatments, and the conditions affecting it. The skin has three primary layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.

Epidermis

The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin, visible. This layer undergoes constant renewal every 30-45 days, replacing dead skin cells with new ones. It contains melanocytes, which produce melanin and give the skin its tone.

Dermis

The dermis is thicker than the epidermis and is located beneath it. This layer houses hair follicles, blood vessels, sweat/oil glands, nerve endings, and lymph vessels. SMP involves depositing pigment in the upper dermis, known as the papillary layer, to create the appearance of hair follicles.

Hypodermis

The hypodermis, also known as the subcutaneous fat layer, is beneath the dermis. It attaches the skin to underlying muscles, acts as a shock absorber, and provides heat insulation. This layer is not typically involved in SMP; deeper pigment placement can lead to blurred impressions.

During SMP, minimal trauma occurs as the needle penetrates the skin’s superficial layers. Post-procedure, temporary redness, swelling, and minor scabbing may occur, usually subsiding within a week. Correct pigment placement is crucial to avoid blurry impressions. Choosing the suitable pigment ensures it remains visible in the upper dermis. The Fitzpatrick Scale can help determine the appropriate approach for different skin types, aiding in selecting the right pigment and technique. Knowing contraindications, like inflamed skin conditions, and having clients declare their medical history is essential for successful SMP treatment. Proper technique and understanding of skin layers are vital for effective and safe procedures.

FAQ

It is common for clients to report minimal discomfort during the procedure, which is often described as light scratching or vibration. Technicians may use numbing cream to ensure a comfortable experience. Some clients even find the process relaxing. However, pain tolerance varies from person to person, so it’s best to discuss any concerns with your technician beforehand.
Sessions vary in duration based on the extent of the treatment area. Typically, they last between 2 and 4 hours. A complete treatment usually requires 2 to 3 sessions about a week apart. Sessions may be shorter for smaller areas or touch-ups. Your technician will provide a more accurate time estimate during your consultation.
It’s recommended that you avoid washing your scalp for 4-5 days after each treatment session. This allows the pigment to settle properly. Your technician will provide specific aftercare instructions. Once the initial healing period is over, you can resume normal hair-washing routines. It’s essential to use gentle, SMP-friendly products to maintain your results long-term.
Yes, when performed by a skilled technician, SMP results look natural in various lighting conditions, including sunlight. The pigments used are designed to match your skin tone and hair color. Modern SMP techniques create a three-dimensional effect that mimics natural hair follicles. However, choosing an experienced technician who understands how to create depth and dimension for the most natural look is crucial.
Absolutely. Many clients with SMP maintain a closely shaved look. Using electric razors or beard trimmers on your scalp is safe after the healing period. Some clients prefer to keep their hair slightly longer to blend with the SMP. Your technician can advise on the best hair length to complement your SMP results.
SMP works well for most hair colors. Technicians can adjust the pigment shade to match the color of your natural hair or create a custom blend for the most natural-looking results. Technicians use specialized techniques for clients with light or gray hair to ensure a seamless blend. During your consultation, your technician will assess your hair color and skin tone to determine the best pigment match.
